Shooting at Howe Park Wounds 4 People Shot in the Arden-Arcade Section of Sacramento County

Law enforcement in Sacramento are probing a shooting incident that took place Saturday evening at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area at the moment deputies were dispersing an unauthorized event of several hundred people.

Prior to the Shooting

Sacramento County law enforcement first arrived at Howe Park at approximately 6:30 Saturday evening after learning of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Shortly after, another report was received describing an alleged brawl taking place at Howe Park.

Aerial units conducted an aerial sweep but reported no active disturbance. Regardless, authorities discovered that hundreds of people had come together at the location without authorization.

When the Shots Rang Out

Responding units moved to clear the area by encircling the gathering and making announcements telling those gathered to clear out. Roughly 15 read more minutes were allowed for people to comply.

It was during this dispersal that upwards of 20 gunshots were fired. The barrage of gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Deputies immediately began looking for those injured.

Four Gunshot Victims

Ultimately, four victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. Those injured — made up of one woman and three men all believed to be in their 20s — were airlifted or driven to nearby hospitals. Emergency physicians confirmed that two were treated for serious injuries, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one had injuries classified as minor. In a positive development, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.

Metro Fire Sacramento provided support and helped care for shooting victims on location.

The Investigation

Most of the gunfire seemed to have taken place adjacent to the Cottage Way corridor near the Home Depot store on the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Investigators located extra shell casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Bullet damage were discovered in the wrought iron perimeter fencing alongside the nearby Home Depot. These discoveries confirmed that a second shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from Cottage Way aimed at the Home Depot store. The nearby Home Depot was locked down during the incident. CSI investigators and detectives continued working throughout the night.

Suspect Vehicle Located

Information obtained over scanner radio traffic established that a vehicle identified as a Kia had been detained in an area within Solano County. Four people were stopped and detained. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were traveling to Solano County to collect the individuals for formal questioning. Video that was reviewed confirmed that two individuals had fired weapons.
